Let's Talk Tent Weights- Easy DIY Ideas for Every Market Vendor

One of the questions we get asked most often is:

"What can I use for tent weights?"

The good news is you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on commercial canopy weights. Some of the best solutions are inexpensive, easy to build yourself, and can even become part of your booth display.

Here are a few of our favorite options.

Office Water Jugs (Our Favorite)

If we could recommend just one DIY solution, this would be it.

Five-gallon office water jugs are inexpensive, reusable, and incredibly versatile. Their built-in handles make them easy to secure to your canopy, and because they can be transported empty and filled when you arrive (if water is available), they're much easier to move than solid concrete weights.

Rather than attaching weight only at the bottom of each leg, we like suspending the jugs from the upper corners of the canopy frame using ratchet straps or rope. This helps apply downward force to the entire structure and keeps the canopy feeling much more stable.

Even better.... they don't have to look like water jugs.

Many vendors decorate them to match their booth aesthetic by wrapping them in fabric, vinyl, or decorative covers. You can even hang small signs from them to display your logo, social media, QR code, or current promotions. Suddenly your tent weights become part of your display instead of something you're trying to hide.

Concrete Bucket Weights

This is one of the most common DIY options you'll see at markets.

Fill a five-gallon bucket with concrete and install an eye bolt before it cures so it's easy to attach to your canopy.

They're durable, affordable, and will likely last for years.

PVC Concrete Weights

Another popular DIY option is filling PVC pipe with concrete and adding eye bolts to each end.

These take up very little space in your vehicle, stack neatly, and look cleaner than buckets.

They're especially popular with vendors who travel to several markets each month.

Barbell Weight Plates

Already have a home gym?

Weight plates make excellent tent weights when securely attached with ratchet straps or weight sleeves.

This is a great option if you already own them and don't want to build anything new.

Commercial Canopy Weight Bags

If you'd rather purchase something ready to go, commercial canopy weight bags are widely available.

Most are designed to be filled with sand or pea gravel and wrap directly around your canopy legs.

They're convenient, compact, and easy to store between events.

Water-Filled Commercial Weights

Several companies also make refillable plastic weights that you fill with water after arriving at your event.

These are lightweight to transport and work well for many vendors, especially if you're traveling long distances.

Don't Forget Your Displays

Your canopy isn't the only thing the wind can move.

Clothing racks, pegboards, shelving, banner stands, and display fixtures can all become unstable with a strong gust.

If you've invested time into creating a beautiful booth, take a few extra minutes to secure those pieces too. A hidden sandbag, weight plate, or other discreet weight can keep your displays upright and protect your products throughout the day.

The Best Tent Weight Is the One You'll Actually Use

There's no single "right" way to weight a canopy.

Some vendors love concrete buckets. Others swear by PVC weights. Personally, we're big fans of office water jugs because they're affordable, versatile, and can even become part of your booth design.

Whatever method you choose, make sure your weights are securely attached to your canopy and heavy enough for the conditions. Proper tent weights protect your booth, your neighbors, and the shoppers who make our markets so much fun.
